Let me start off by saying this is a great pack with a lot of excellent features. I use this pack every day for biking and used it extensively for hiking/backpacking in the southwest. It has a good amount of room for what I need, lots of pockets, great straps for securing the bag itself and other items, and of course the camelbak reservoir is excellent.
My only complaint is the build quality. I've had this pack for about a month. Within the first week the small strap that you can attach a bike light to tore free of the bag while removing the light. The single thread stitching in that area is not nearly enough. I exchanged that bag for a new one.
After 2 weeks of use with the new bag, I just noticed the mesh liner on the bag strap is coming out. It appears the mesh itself has torn free of the stitching.
Camelbak needs to address these issues if this is to be any kind of outdoor use pack, especially for hiking and biking.

I've owned a couple H.A.W.G. camelbaks over the last decade or more. I ride a LOT and eventually wear them out. I also need to carry a lot of gear (even water filter machines) for epic 12 to 16 hour rides into the middle of nowhere. It's got huge volume, but I still usually have it stuffed solid. The new H.A.W.G. NV is the perfect pack for my needs.
The new HAWG NV improves over the old version in several ways:
1. The straps work better for pack fit and support so my back doesn't hurt any more. I typically carry over 20 lbs of water and gear, and the old version of the HAWG was started hurting my lower spine on very long trips. After one long trip, I had to visit orthopedists for MRIs because my L5 vertebra got a bad inflammation and killing me with pain. Never happened again.
2. Better air flow from the thick back support. Between this heavy air flow and the better straps, I almost don't know I've got a heavy load of water and gear on my back any more.
3. Many more small pockets on the side and top (ipod) for all sorts of small items, so that I no longer need to search for them in the cavernous main chamber.
4. The water compartment is better insulated to keep cool. It also opens on the other side of the straps now, so the hose hole goes the other way from what I'm used to doing.
5. The tie down straps use instant release tabs to allow access to the pack. These tie down straps also have dual purpose to tie down the netting on the back.
6. The compartment volume and number of internal sub-compartments is just as good as the old HAWG pack.
7. A pull out yellow rain hood to cover the entire pack is integrated into a pull out lower compartment. It works quickly and nicely, and is sewn in place on the bottom so you can't loose it. Fabulous feature. I no longer need to wrap all my gear in plastic bags on rainy days.
8. Overall, the design is much more elegant and artistic, with touches of netting, two colors of nylon, and a leather-like material integrated nicely in a melee of function and beauty.
Things I don't like:
1. Some of the zippers, such as the water compartment, close by going down, not up. Very confusing as well as hard to operate. You want to pull up on a heavy bag to close it. I almost want to turn the bag upside down to close the zipper.
2. The side pocket zipper goes all the way down along the side rather than around the top. Good for access but you need to be very careful that all the little things you'd tend to store in that small convenient place don't fall out and get lost.
3. There is no longer a bungee cord strap on the bottom of the pack. I liked to put my windbreaker there. On the other hand, this cord and the gear hanging down snagged on my bike seat a lot, and eventually broke off after about 5 years. So no major loss. In it's place, we get a rain cover pulling out from the bottom. (see above)
4. The rear netting pouch doesn't have quite as much room as before, but the new netting & nylon flap is better secured now by the quick tab pull down straps.
5. There's some leather-like material with horizontal slots on the back netting & nylon flap back. I cannot figure out it's purpose. I wrote Camelbak customer service and they wrote back:
THOSE LEATHER-LIKE PATCHES ARE MADE OF HYPALON®. YOU COULD LASH SOMETHING TO YOUR PACK BY ROUTING CORD THROUGH THE SLITS, BUT THEY ARE MOSTLY INTENDED AS AN AESTHETIC DESIGN DETAIL.
I'm not sure these patches are strong enough to trust tying something down to them unless it's light, like a helmet or less. I almost feel like I can rip them off with my hands.
6. MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT: No Instructions!! They don't explain what they mean by "D-2 Harness Adjustment" and how it adjusts. They don't explain the use of the rear pack slotted patches, as per my item 5 above. They don't explain how to quick clip and unclip the tie down strap clips, that operate in a very unusual way (looks reversed). Although it's nice once understood, it took me quite a while to get it. They have a diagram on a tag showing a helmet attachment that doesn't describe the HAWG I bought. I still don't know how to attach a helmet. They also don't explain how to wash and care for the camelbak. I often need to clean mud, dirt, and white salt from sweat residue off my pack. They don't say how on any included tags. I ultimately found some unsatisfactory cleaning instructions buried on their web site. (They say don't wash, instead soak the pack in a bucket of water!)

Having owned multiple other Camelbak products since the beginning, I've ceom to expect some pretty rugged build quality, clever features(like the integrated rain hood, bladder hanger, tab for my rear red blinking light, removable waist strap...etc.), and also light weight from their products. This one did not dissapoint in any of those departments. The reason I got this pack was because of the N.V.I.S. system, that allows ample airflow across my back while I'm hiking, riding my motorcycle to work or using my commuter bike, and just for general use. I run hot anyway, and live in the heat, and this is by FAR the most comfortable backpack I've ever owned.

Our guide was wowed by my Camelbak once he realized I had water, raincoat and room to stow camera and bins when the rain started. At one point while I looked thru his scope, he lifted my bag from my back. (I guess checking the weight). He begged us to bring him one on a future trip--we've sent him the men's version (h.a.w.g.)
