 "Stays on my shoulder!" 2010-08-01
By Kristine (Chicago, IL)
I bought this "To Go" shoulder bag directly from the manufacturer's website since it was on clearance for $37 (the outside design is not one of the newer ones), but I had to pay $10 for shipping. I didn't want to spend $60 or more on this brand if it wasn't any good. Well, I am very happy with the bag. Finally, a purse that stays on my shoulder (or can be worn across the body)! The material is really good quality as is the lining. It's a pretty decent size--I would like it if it were a little deeper by an inch or two (height and width are good though). There are some nice little pockets and the ones for water bottles work---my Ice Mountain water bottles fit in just great. There is a large back pocket that zippers; when you open the purse (there is a clip) there are two pockets under the flap (for pens/small pad of paper or whatever; there is an inside back pocket with a zipper; there are two small inside pockets (for a cell phone etc.); and there are the two outside pockets (for water bottles---I put hand sanitizer in one). I will now be checking out their other designs here on Amazon.

"Good organization, sturdy, but a bit too heavy" 2010-07-10
By SunsetDweller (San Francisco, CA)
Overall, this bag gets high marks for organization and sturdiness. The material is stiff and strong, so you don't need to worry about putting it down on pavement or wet surfaces. It is weather-resistant, too. The interior organization is pretty nice, though I do wish the side bottle pockets were deeper and wider, to accommodate larger stainless steel bottles. Smaller interior pockets for cell phone and iPod would be nice too. I also wish the fabric strap was a bit wider and softer, for comfort's sakes. Bag can get pretty heavy when packed. But overall, it is a nice everyday bag: perfect for moms or anyone else who needs to haul around a lot of stuff (not laptops though - not big enough for laptops or binders). I appreciate the feminine touches; the bag is pretty without being overly girly or cutesy. I do wish the bag was made in the United States. I'm also curious as to what the "faux leather" is - I think it might be PVC (some retailer websites state it is PVC, others do not); the production of PVC is horrible for the environment. The bag itself is nice, but like other reviewers, I question the overall social and environmental ethics of the company: I'd feel better about them if they disclosed what the "faux leather" material actually was and could verify that the manufacturing process of the bags did NOT dump all manner of harmful chemicals into the environment.

Yeahhhhhhhhhhh, I had a email chat with Sharon today. These bags (I bought one this week) are wonderfully functional, beautiful and sturdy...And they are made in China. I wrote to express concern with this and here is first response.

Thank you for contacting Haiku!

I, too, appreciate your concerns. Ideally, we would do production stateside for environmental reasons.

For the same reasons we have, companies like Timbuk2 have outsourced production. Although some of it is done locally, it is cost prohibitive to do it all here and stay in business. The company that owns Chrome does the bulk of its production for their other brands overseas.

We began our company with production in Texas but could not afford to keep it there. In fact, I just recently researched going with local production and found we could not compete in terms of quality and cost.

It's a difficult decision to make as a business owner.

Because these issues are important to me, I have made it a point to meet the factory workers, check out their living conditions and have had the opportunity to get to know some of them personally. I see these people as human beings that are trying to make a living and have a happy life, just like us. Some of them that I know would so love to leave and be able to live as we do here but they do not have that freedom.

I see the work that we do over there as supporting people, not a government. We certainly have our share of questionable practices in this country.

We all must make the choices that we feel are the best for us. I can appreciate yours and want to honor the fact that you care enough to inquire.

It's not so much the govt of China, but in reality, we have companies here that illegally ship used electronics there and little kids walk on mountains of lead. I know it's hard to make stuff in the US as cheaply, I appreciate the efforts to monitor conditions over there and all...but

"60 Minutes is going to take you to one of the most toxic places on Earth -- a place that government officials and gangsters don't want you to see. It's a town in China where you can't breathe the air or drink the water, a town where the blood of the children is laced with lead. It's worth risking a visit because, as correspondent Scott Pelley first reported last November, much of the poison is coming out of the homes, schools and offices of America."

WE are the bad guys here, and that's what hurts.

Let me ask you, my bag was $74, how much in materials? Marketing and PROFIT? How much are you paying the Chinese??

I need the wallet! But, I don't think I can do it, the bag is mine I am enjoying it, in hindsight though I would not have bought it. (I noticed the "Made In" tag after I got back to hotel)

Just think about it, be GREEN in your soul, not as a catchy marketing trend.

Best,

And I got...

"Thank you for your interest."

How's that Karma SHARON???

 "Sturdy but stiff" 2010-03-13
By TravelFreak
The bag seems very well built, so much so that it is a bit stiff. I wear the bag across my body and it doesn't bend or mold very well. It can also be a bit of a struggle to fit a bottle in the side bottle-holders but you can eventually work it in (only good for the smallest bottles though). The nylon strap makes it appear a on the cheap side but the bag itself is high quality and does not look or feel cheap. Lots of pockets but I wish more of them had zippers. Overall, a decent bag for the price.

"Dependable bag for outings and excusions" 2009-06-24
By D. or L. Stellick
I have owned my Haiku bag for 6 months and I go to it over and over again when I'm out and about with my 3 children. It has 3 roomy pockets inside for carrying all the neccesities - no matter what yours may be! It also has one zippered pocket inside as well....all this besides the large main compartment. The bag also has a zippered pocket on the back of the bag. It's great for items that need to be accessed easily. To top it all off, on each end of the bag, are two water bottle slots. Vacation bag, museum bag, city park bag, zoo bag - it's great for everything. And to top it off - it's vegan. The bag has an adjustable strap so it can be worn on the shoulder or cross body (my choice). Excellent bag!
