By W. Jackson Haynes (Nashville, TN)
Overall a good product. really liked the look and feel of the bag, and overall it improved my snowboarding experience. takes a few minutes to get used to having something on your back but it's worth the adjustment. the only thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that the release valve leaked by too much. not a big fan of having water leak onto me when i'm hitting the slope in sub-freezing temps. going to look at other options with regards to the dispensing.

This backpack is great! All the stitching and buckles are good quality. It is definitely meant more for use in snowboarding but I plan to use it for hiking and mt biking. The only draw back I have is the main compartment only has a divider at the bottom. It has the goggle pocket and the media player pocket. Could use more internal or side pockets.

 "Awesome Hydradtion Daypack" 2010-02-06
By Nathan A. Armstrong (Valencia, CA)
I ordered the Camelbak Menace Hydration Daypack after doing a lot of research on the internet. It arrived today and I was so excited it was exactly what I expected and needed for my weekly 8-10 mile hikes with our community hiking club. The design if for snowboarders and Skiers, however the design fits perfectly for carrying extra layers of clothes or storing them when the day warms up. The Hydration tube is insulated so the water won't freese in cold weather or stays cool in summer...and it stores in the right backpack strap when not in use. There are enough pockets for my camera, mp3 player and a place for the ear piece cord for my music player to insert through the top of the pack. The pack adjusts to practically every shape and there is plenty of room for snacks, lunch and a first aid kit. I'm excited to get on the trail and put it to the test. The Camelback water container holds two liters which is perfect for my needs. I love it!!!CamelBak Menace Hydration Pack

"Just what I was looking for." 2009-11-04
By luvjetz
First of all, I ordered from Backcountry and I highly recommend ordering from them. I received this order in two days.

On to the product. From the time the lift opens to the time it closes I am latched into my skis. I only stopped once last year (Tried to snowboard for the first time without a helmet, not recommended). I'd constantly end the day looking for every beverage in sight, once my thirst was quenched I'd start trying to satisfy my hunger. This bag solves all those problems and more.

For hydration on the go, CamelBak is number one. The bladder is a little harder to fill the first few times than I like but is placed well with plenty of room in its compartment. The drinking tube is on the right strap. The straw itself can almost be fully zipped into the strap so that it doesn't catch during a tree run or on the lift. It is insulated well and I never had problems with freezing.

I usually go with Uncrustables and granola bars. This pack has far more room than I need. There are two small padded pockets, one for goggles, the other for an MP3 player, camera, or whatever you want to put in it. The large pocket, where my food was, has large T-handle zippers. These were great, I didn't have to take my gloves off.

Everything on this pack was designed for skiing. On its exterior it can hold skis, a snowboard, or a helmet. The snowboard can be hauled vertically or horizontally. Skis are easily strapped in from top left to bottom right. The top strap for the skis is adjustable and is easily unhooked with gloves on. The back distributes it load perfectly. With skis, a full bladder, as well as food, MP3 player, and camera I very comfortably hauled this to the lift with my ski boots on and poles in hand. The skis were angled enough so as to not hit my legs but not so far as to swing around or reach out and hit people. While skiing, I hit jumps and do double diamond without a problem. I hardly even notice it is there. Its only downfall is as expected, it is a little uncomfortable on the lift. After a few hours I was comfortable with it but the first few times of getting on it felt odd.

I hope to add more to this review as the season moves forward and more runs are opened, especially the ones I have to hike to. Highly recommend for all skiers, snowboarders, or anyone who wants a hydration pack.

 "Fantastic Running Hydration Pack" 2009-11-15
By Nos (VA USA)
I bought the Octane XC because I needed more water than what my FlashFlo's 45oz. during long marathon training runs. Additionally, I had a hard time reaching behind my back to get at my energy gels. Most times I had to slow to a walk, loosen the waist strap, slide the fanny pack to the front or side to get at the zippered compartment. I previously used a Nathan Labs HPL #020 hydration vest, but didn't like it since it felt like I was wearing another layer of clothing. So with the start of my long runs, I got the Octane XC.

First, be aware that there are two Camelbaks called Octane; the Octane XC and the Octane 8+. The Octane 8+ is slightly heaver (1.3lbs dry for XC vs. 1.98lbs dry for the 8+) due to it has a larger compartment to hold gear. Probably great if you need a lot of stuff, but I have a Camelbak Cloud Runner if I need to lug around a lot of stuff for hikes or biking. For me on a run all I need is to take my energy gels, cell phone, and lots of water. So to same some weight I went with the XC.

My first run with the XC was a 12-miler. The XC loaded with a full 70 oz. didn't slosh or move around on my back. The air channel design on the inside back panel kept me comfortable. The XC's design allows full arm swing without bumping into the side storage areas on the waist straps. Speaking of which, the side storage is great for keeping the energy gels handy. I was able to easily access those area without having to slow down or move the XC. The top storage area is a small, but was great for holding my cell phone, ID, and keys. Halfway through my run, the sun broke through the clouds and the vest I was wearing was becoming too hot to wear. While the XC has a criss-cross bungy cord to hold stuff, I'm always paranoid of having things fall off. Instead I was able to store the vest in the same compartment as the hydration bladder with no problems.

One bit of advice, Camelbak did an outstanding job of using elastic band or velcro straps to keep all the strap ends from dangling. As such, it's best to adjust all the straps (to include the sternum strap which I had to move to a lower loop on the shoulder straps) before running with it. In my excitement, I just filled up the hydration bladder and went on a run. So each time I adjusted a strap, I had to undo the elastic/velcro band, make the adjustment, roll up the excess strap and redo the elastic/velcro band. All that while running isn't easy. Also, the drinking tube has a clip on the right shoulder strap, I didn't like the way the end would hit me if I pulled the tube all the way down. I slid the tube end up, closer to the clip, so it didn't bounce around.

Bottom line: This one's a keeper. 12-miles and once I got the straps adjusted, I hardly noticed I was wearing it.

"Comfort, Capacity, and big sip bite-valve." 2009-08-10
By mountain hiker (Vancouver, B.C.)
I shopped around quite a bit before choosing this hydra pak. The existing reviews were good and I realy liked the dark cheddar color for visibility in the forest. I wanted a well-fitting pak that would not move around when I run. I am not disappointed, in fact it is a great pak. It is easy to fill, the bite valve gives a good dose of water, and the fit and styling of the pak feels good and looks good. If you only need enough storage space for a phone, a bit of fruit or a bar, your keys, small wallet, pocket knife, and an extra shirt or towel to secure under the bungy straps, then this XC70 pak will do fine. I'm glad that Camelbak made this available in the Cheddar color because I think it is very important to have high visibility when hiking in case you're in need of rescue or are mistaken for an animal by a trigger-happy hunter. The 70 Ounce bladder is plenty for a 3 hour hike in cool weather or a 2 hour hike in hot weather. You do really have to remove the pak to access the waist zipper pockets but that is fine by me, becaue the main thing is that you have easy access to water on the go. Having said that, I would really like to see a cell phone pocket on the front of the pak for quick access while on the run. Bottom line is that this hydration pak is worth the extra bucks.

"Does exactly what it should do..." 2009-06-06
By C. Garcia (Texas)
Camelbak Octane XC 2L Hydration Pack: Excellent product. I've used mine for 4 months now and am extremely happy with it. The product works exactly as it should. Side pockets have plenty of room for running fuel. Top pocket perfect to hold id, mini-med kit. I take a 15-20 mile run in the TX heat before having to refill. Not too heavy but I suspect the weight distribution to the shoulders is an advantage for guys. Not sure how it is for women. I sweat a lot so I have to wear a full t-shirt to avoid chaffing. On that note, it doesn't take a lot to clean this product. A bit of soap, water and air dry after a long run and it's clean and ready to go.

"Great if you have no hips!" 2009-06-05
By travenue (Northampton, MA USA)
I have had trouble with belt/bottle packs staying up on my very narrow hips, so I decided to give this pack a try. It took a couple runs to get used to it, but I have found it to be very comfortable. The airflow is good and I don't really notice my back being any hotter. It holds plenty of water. I usually run 10-15 miles at a time and never finish it all. It fits better/flatter if you don't fill it to the max (or it will shrink down after you drink a little). It has decent storage space and side pockets that you can reach while running, although it takes a bit of a reach. It feels very light, but I must mention I am 6'8" and 235, so the extra 6 pounds or so isn't much. The drinking tube flopping around annoyed me, so I attached a pair of velcro pads so I could easily stick it to one of the straps. If you find yourself with a water belt and tightening it enough to cut off circulation, just to get it to stay up, then this pack is for you!

 "Great running pack" 2009-03-01
By twin lakes WI guy (twin lakes, wi)
Got this pack for distance running. It fits very comfortably and snugly for running, so no friction burns. Has just enough tactically placed pocket space for energy gels, phone, money, etc and really beats carrying water bottles while running. Good pading too. Only down side is it does not come with cleaning or drying supplies, so make sure you pick up a kit when you buy this pack. Overall excellent product, would buy again.

"Looks study and works ok, but clips don't work" 2008-05-20
By N. Chen (NJ)
First of all, It's my first time using a Hydration Pack.

The Clips that were supposed to be used to clip to existing bags are difficult to understand.

I've read reviews about it saying the clips don't really work. But being an Engineering student I thought "if the producer said it will work then it should, one just need to read the instructions more carefully...."

Well, turns out I am wrong in this case. no instruction was provided regarding how the bag clips should work and after trying several things on it, I declared that the clips are either quite poorly designed or required additional purchases to work on your bag.

It fits on the side pouch of my bag in an awkward way due to its large size.

so unless you plan on leaving this waterbag inside of your existing bag(which works pretty well, mind you). you should get a stand alone hydration pack instead.

Customer Buzz
 "Tough, but very bulky" 2007-08-24
By Pen Name (Fairbanks, Alaska)
This is a very strong 2-liter water bladder that fits inside an outer pouch (what you see in the picture). This is definitely "leak-proof." The bladder itself is stronger and thicker than other bladders I've used, and once it is inside the outer pouch, I don't see any way of it getting punctured. I am fairly confident I could fill this up and toss it onto the rocks from 50 feet and it would be okay. So it should hold up to branches and thorns that you brush up against. The reservoir comes with a lifetime warranty as well.

The description says it attaches to the outside of your pack. I guess it does using those clips if you purchase a couple straps, but I could not figure out anything to attach it to on my overnight pack or how that would work. There were no instructions explaining how the "slick clips" worked. I just stuffed mine into my pack. The handle at the top is very convenient for hanging it on a tree though, and I would say is one of the best features of this product. This bladder will definitely not fit in a pack's reservoir pocket, as one description told me. Even the smallest 2-liter Unbottle is fairly enormous. It will take up a lot of room, so if you need to bring a lot of water, it is best to go with several smaller bladders like the Platypus Bottle 2+L (80 ounces).

The outer pouch does seem to insulate the bladder fairly well, and keep your water cool, which is going to be a requirement if this is clipped to the outside of your pack in the direct sun. The bladder has a huge opening on it, which makes it very convenient for filling up. The hose has a lock on it, although I never had problems with it leaking so I have never used it. If you stuff this in a pack however, it might be nice in case something shifts and presses down on the bite valve.

Lastly, if you've never used a bladder or water container with a drinking tube before, you don't know what you're missing. It is so convenient to run the hose through your pack so you can just bite down on the valve and get water. I keep water bottles in my pack's side pockets, but it is a pain to use them when I can just stick the hose in my mouth and bite down. You also drink more often with a tube so you stay better hydrated. My only gripe is that the Unbottle doesn't come with a clip to attach the tube to your shirt, that way it is right in front of you when you need it.

Overall, if this bladder is all the water you need, and you are able to figure out how to attach it to your pack, I would definitely recommend it. But it is very bulky and takes up space, so if you are planning an overnight trip and need to bring along several containers of water, I would only bring one 2 or 3 liter UnBottle with you.

Im always so tempted to fill it all the way, but I dont usually go on long excursions enough to go through half of the 3 liters it holds. Ive put it through the leak test and mine performed fine. There arent any straps to throw this over your shoulder or anything, but it fits nicely in my jansport backpack or any sport sack for easy carrying. loving it so far.

"Wonderful in every way, save that it's persistently broken." 2009-10-16
By James Stein (Staten Island, NY United States)
Gosh, my Camelbak.

I ordered one. When it first arrived I was quite impressed with the construction of it: very durable, it appeared, thick plastic, thick covering, all the stitches looked like they could survive the end of the world. I filled it up, gave it a light jiggle, and it leaked right through the fill hole.

Sent it back.

The second one leaked out the bottom.

Sent it back.

The third one went straight to the water-holding test. It looked fine. Great! We were going out the next morning, so we prepared all of our things, and I just happened to leave the filled camelbak hanging up. When we were getting ready to set out in the morning, I found a nice, small puddle underneath the camelbak. It had leaked -slowly, subtly- out of the bottom.

I have trouble attributing this to a run of bad luck. It's certainly not impossible I just happened to get three, rare, poor-quality stoaways in a row. But even if this was just a bad run of luck, it certainly speaks poorly of Camelbak's quality control staff.

For all the good I hear of Camelbak, I can't imagine myself bothering with another Camelbak product ever again.
