"Defective batch on a usually good product" 2007-10-20
By Hunter
I have owned one of these gravity filters for over 8 years and have never had a problem. This unit sold at Amazon is the same one I've had all these years. We used ours overseas while doing missionary work.

I ordered a new one recently from Amazon so we would have one while on furlough in the USA. Sadly I have returned two of them because the spout hole has been drilled too large. It's actually a bit oblong. It leaks if you don't tighten the spout down tight and leaks if you tighten it down because the washers collapse into the hole. I called Katadyn after the second time and asked for a new lower bucket with the correct size hole. They could not do this and told me to return it to Amazon.

Amazon has been great with the first exchange and now the return. It's just too bad that they got a bad lot recently. Hopefully you won't get one that is defective like the ones I got. It is not supposed to leak around the spout. If it does, return it.

"Gold standard for water filtering" 2007-07-27
By Samuel M. Gon III (Honolulu, HI USA)
Ever since testing katadyn filters in Leptospirosis-laced waters in Hawaii, and then traveling for a month in India where the multi-filter katadyn was the household standard, I've been sold on their line of products. When it came time for me to consider a water filtration system for my home, I immediately investigated options and was delighted to find the reasonably-priced Gravidyn system on Amazon. Coupled with the free shipping it was soon apparent that this was the best option: the standard for the international red cross had better be good enough for my family! When the item arrived at my workplace, I couldn't help but assemble it and test the unit, and not only did it pass my own taste tests, but those of some very demanding colleagues at my office. I anticipate years of service, and with the reputation and stability of katadyn, I expect that parts and replacement filters will be readily available.

 "Excellent filter" 2006-11-28
By Cadenza (SoCal, CA - USA)
I purchased the TRK Drip Filter (Gravidyn) as a gift for a relative (for home use) in southeast Asia whose water supply is from a well. The criteria were: ceramic element, compact, plastic or synthetic housing. As I've used Katadyn Combi Filter for backpacking and occasionally at home for 6 years, Katadyn was high on my list. IMO, ceramic elements give the best filtration. The initial cost is high but their value is realized through durability and long life. This unit has been in service since January '06, filtering ~10L/day or a total of ~3,300L (864 gallons) so far. The Activated Carbon (A/C) portion of the filter is effective for 6 months but the ceramic is good for 39,000 gallons (~148,980L). What I like most about this filter: fast flow rate (3 elements), impregnated silver-oxide prevents fungus/mildew growth on/in the element.

 "It worked..." 2010-10-24
By Max
It's impossible to tell if things like this work because if you don't get sick, you don't know if the water was infected or not. Nonetheless, on my last backpacking trip I planned on getting water from a stream that I saw on a map.

The stream ended up being extremely low, almost dry actually. The water was brown, almost completely still and very sketchy looking... I was pretty reluctant to drink it but I didn't have any other source of water for the trip.

I filled a 40oz container and added the pill. Waited 4 hours and drank the whole thing. Then got more water for the rest of the trip. I didn't get sick so it must have worked!

"Best tasting water, but takes a long time" 2010-09-24
By Bread Maker (San Francisco)
My friend and I went on a five day backpacking trip in CA, and hands down, these tablets produced the most normal tasting water. We had access to plenty of lakes, streams, and sometimes a pond looking pool of water. We didn't take a chance, so we treated all sources with this and a different brand. Although other brands took only a few minutes, this one takes at least four hours to treat. Other brands actually change the color into an orange color, but this Katadyn makes the water clear and we couldn't tell the difference.

Again the four hour treatment time takes a bit of planning, but definitely worth it.

 "Comparing chemical treatment methods" 2010-09-04
By Arthur Bradley (Eastern USA)
The EPA estimates that 90% of the world's fresh water is contaminated and unsuitable for drinking. The days of kneeling down on a hike and sipping from the stream are long gone. Don't make the mistake of thinking that just because water looks clear or tastes good that it is free of contaminants. That includes frozen water, which can house hepatitis A, Salmonella, and Cryptosporidium for months.

There are many options for purifying the water, but this post will compare commercial products that rely on halogen chemical treatments.

Polar Pure - contains iodine crystals, has an almost indefinite shelf life if kept tightly sealed, and very inexpensive per dose cost, requires measuring the dosage using the cap (which can be imprecise).

Potable Aqua - contains iodine tablets, shelf life of up to four years if properly stored - if they've turned a light green don't use, moderately expensive per dose cost, easy to administer doses (two tablets per quart of water).

Micropur MP1 - contains chlorine dioxide tablets, has a shelf life of at least four years, moderately expensive per dose cost, and comes in easy to administer doses (one tablet per quart of water).

Simple household bleach - 2 drops per quart of water (assuming a a bleach solution of 5-6% hypochlorite), may wish to double the dose for cloudy water, shelf life of bleach is only about 6 months, must use a dropper to administer dose, very inexpensive per dose cost.

Tincture of iodine - 5 drops per quart (assuming a 2% iodine solution), may wish to double the dose for cloudy water, almost indefinite shelf life if properly stored, must use a dropper to administer dose, modest per dose cost.

All of the methods are effective at killing bacteria, somewhat effective against viruses, and of limited value against protozoa cysts. Cryptosporidium in particular is resistant to halogen treatments.

Most treatments only require 30 minutes. However, very cold water (i.e., less than 40 degrees F) should be allowed to sit for 2 or more hours, or be treated with a double dose.

As far as taste, all will introduce some chemical taste into the water. In a very unscientific taste test of chemical treatment methods, my own family concluded that iodine-treated water was by far the worst smelling and tasting, bleach-treated was second, and water treated with Micropur MP1 ready-to-use tablets was the least objectionable.

Finally, you can add Kool-aid to treated water to help the taste. Not only will it help to mask the chemical taste, but the ascorbic acid (vitamin C) converts the chlorine or iodine to tasteless chloride and iodide.

Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful.

 "Perfectly packaged." 2010-06-15
By teotwawki12 (Michigan)
I have not used these to purify water (yet), but I must say that they are packaged perfectly to add to a small survival kit or a survival tin. They are individually packaged and flat, and that was just what I needed for my Altoids tin mini survival kit. (They have a good reputation and I have no doubt as to their quality.)

 "Worked for me" 2009-01-20
By Old GAME
I used these pills on 430 miles of hiking along the southern AT last year. I didn't get sick drinking from the springs along the trail. The recommended 4 hour treatment is a disadvantage, and you need to plan for it. I carried two full quart bottles and always filled and treated a bottle whenever it got empty. I also treated water overnight and used untreated water when boiling water for meals.

Some hikers believe that filters are actually lighter because they don't need to carry as much water and that makes up for the weight of the pump. Personally, I didn't mind carrying extra H2O, especially when springs turn out to be dry.

 "Gravidyn Filters" 2007-12-26
By Ralph Ware (Thrall, Texas USA)
I live in a remote location where my only source of water is rain either captured from my roof or in my pond. I chose the Gravidyn filters for their ability to produce biologically safe and really good tasting drinking water.

I can't emphasize the "really good tasting" part enough. The activated charcoal does a superb job. I change the filters twice a year and the cost is comparable to what I was spending on bulk bottled water in town. The big advantage for me is that I can make this water at home instead of making a weekly 50 mile round-trip.

 "excellent filter" 2007-07-16
By Nancy Beiman (Ontario, Canada)
If you saw the interior of the upper water chamber on this filter after six month's time, you would not regret money spent on the filter or replacements. There is a lot of rust and stuff from the old pipes in my building. The water certainly tastes better when it's filtered. I use this in an apartment, not in an extreme situation. Your mileage may differ.

This is a lot cheaper than buying 'bottled water' and much better for the environment, as well as for you.

"Do these work on Katadyn's gravity feed systems?" 2010-05-11
By Lincoln County MT (Extreme NW Montana)
I wish vendors and sellers would leave enough information on these types of items to understand what you are buying. What do these fit and what do they work with in the same product or manufactures line for instance. I wish Amazon would include a ask a question link to the sellers so we could ask them. Sure they might not want to answer lots of questions but then they might learn quickly what they need to include. This is one that needs not just some more information but some information at all could be helpful.

I gave item just a 3 stars so as not to ditch the item prior to buying...it's a neutral call as best under the circumstances. I'm in search of a carbon filter or prefilter for the gravity feed system they sell. Love the gravity feed but on occasion an charcoal filter would be useful to make water more palitable.

"For my kids at school" 2010-04-16
By S. A. Josey (Danville, VA USA)

 "Great for traveling" 2009-11-10
By Immer Unterwegs
The this filter goes with the Katadyn Micro water bottle. I use it mostly when I travel and hike. You never need to worry about unclean water no matter where you are. It is an easy system, doesn't require any more work than a normal water bottle and is the same size as a normal waterbottle. I just warn you about one thing: if you change elevation (ie hiking in mountains or especially on a plane), the pressure in the bottle changes and when you open it, water will squirt out at you... but there is an easy solution, open the bottle with the straw in your mouth. I also think that the bottle could use a lid of some sort to keep the straw/mouth piece clean

 "Works GREAT!!" 2010-03-07
By Patriot223 (Florida)
We regularly train in an area that has a few untreated wells intended for horses. While very clear, it is nasty sulfur water with God knows what else in it. This filter may be used w/o charcoal in the filter, however, if you have the additional problem of sulfur, use the charcoal for "Tap Quality Water" or better.

TIP: If filtering water from a spigot you will need to run it into a reservoir of some type for collection tube to be submersed. I used a plastic drink bottle w/top cut off.

"One of the best out there..." 2010-02-11
By Cadenza (SoCal, CA - USA)
I've had my Katadyn Combi since 2003. Chose it over the Pocket because of the ability to use Activated Carbon and I got a good deal... $120 including a spare filter and an extra set of gaskets. It can be screwed onto a Nalgene bottle or a regular bottle. The housing is actually quite sturdy but not as tough as the Pocket. It's seen a few backpacking trips in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Inyo National Forest, Yosemite NP, San Jacinto, Ventana (Big Sur) and SE Asia. Pump rate is good at ~1L/min and the pump handle is big and comfortable. Filtered water tastes great. If you're concerned about viruses, add a chemical solution into the filtered water, wait 15 minutes and you're good to go.

Since then I've bought the Ceradyn for home use and a Gravidyn as a gift. Besides being cost-effective, they've all hold up very well. Ceramic filters rock!!!

 "great water filter system" 2009-06-19
By Britta
Great water filter, I'd recommend it to anyone going backpacking and camping. We do use it together with a Steripen, though, just to make sure.

But the combination of the carbon filter plus the ceramic filter is great and the best choice! Water tastes fantastic! First we were worried that the "plastic" wouldn't be too durable, but it's very rugged and survived dropping on stone etc so I am confident it's going to last a long time. Definitely worth the money, and although not the lightest, we carry it along for backpacking and it's fine. Pumping only became harder after 3-4 days, so take the sponge with you to wash the filter in between.

 "Excellent!" 2009-04-14
By Crablegs (Hawaii)
A quality product designed to do exactly what it is described to do. However, not meant to be your primary source during survival times. Look for something more for that. One comment regarding taste. You need to lubricate the seals between uses so that gives it a slight taste. But it's good to have when you are dying of thirst.

HEAVY , and doesn't carry enough water to justify the weight.

SUCKING HEAVILY- is what you'll do to try and get a SIP of water out it . Plus you have to squeeze the hell out of it to get H2O out of it.

I think I burned more energy trying to drink water than i did on the hiking trip...I've now switched to iodine tabs after this expensive lesson.

By Gleb Liferenko (NYC, NY United States)
Took it on a week-long wilderness solo trip. Performed as advertised. Water tasted great, without any chemical taste. The pump is sufficiently productive. Rugged and solidly engineered, but lightweight. Survived considerable abuse. Looks even more rugged now with the print almost rubbed off. Easy to (dis)assemble and clean. Gives you the minimalist feel without leaving anything to desire. Together with an s-binder attached to the loop, has become a permanent accessory in my equipment.

"Indispensable when traveling to exotic countries" 2009-02-23
By LowRisk (Washington)
I travel to India a lot. All those stories about the lack of potable water are true. In fact, that scene in "Slumdog Millionaire" (if you haven't seen it yet, go tonight) where the protagonist is working in a fast-food restaurant and fills an empty water bottle with tap water, and then glues the serrated plastic top - it's all true. The only time I ever got sick there was when I drank an expensive bottle of designer water, obviously faux.

Still, I love India. It's all the better now because I take this purification system with me. It's very easy to use and works well (or at least, I never get sick anymore). Sure, it takes up some room in the carry-on suitcase, but it's worth it. I now take my Katadyn whenever I travel to developing countries.

 "This is incredible" 2008-03-18
By Christine E. Nattrass (New Haven, CT United States)
I took this water bottle to India, and I drank the tap water and didn't get sick. This was my favorite travel companion on this trip. If you are going to travel to a country without potable tap water, I would strongly recommend this product. It's simply not feasible to get bottled water all of the time, and if you're exposed to excited germs it's best not to be dehydrated too.

I didn't test this on muddy icky water, and I didn't try anything as daring as drinking water from the Ganges. It won't protect you from impurities like heavy metals, although the charcoal filter should dramatically reduce many organic impurities. I had no problems with customs or airport security, although they did check that it had no water in it.

Because of the iodine treatment, the water does taste a little bit like iodine. This is a small price to pay for potable water. Also, it is important to read the manual. You have to let the water sit in the filter for two hours and you have to flush water through the filter if the filter starts dry.
