Design sandwiches the mattresses' air-holding seal between a top layer of open-cell foam and a bottom layer of closed cell foam, joining them all with a guaranteed foam-to-fabric bond. Because the air holding seal is protected by a bottom layer of closed-cell foam, the resulting mattresses are extremely puncture-resistant, providing unprecedented protection from thorns and sharp rocks. And, in the unlikely event of a puncture, they continue to provide essential warmth, comfort, and performance.

 "Sturdy, durable frame" 2010-07-20
By Dan S
I served in the military so I know how much of a beating these ALICE pack frames can take so it was the first choice for me when constructing a backpack for a school project. The group I was in needed a frame that would be able to support a heavy pack made from MDF board. This frame was perfect for the job! It was easy to attach, didn't shift and held up to all of our stress tests. The only problem we found was that the left strap did not tighten as well as the right strap though that was an easy fix. If your looking for a dependable, affordable frame I highly recommend an ALICE pack frame (and an Alice pack too).

 "ALICE pack frame" 2010-06-24

As a Made-In-USA guy, I was hoping it was an authentic USMC/Army issue/surplus and would match my backpack. But it was made in China... :(

 "The old stand-by" 2010-04-24
By Dustin Tarditi (Raleigh, NC)
ALICE packs are the military standard, now replaced with the modern MOLLE system, but surplus gear is hard to turn down for durability and affordability.

The frame and strap assembly is a key component to the system (can use the pack without the frame and waist support, but not recommended!) and the price and shipping were reasonable.

Min arrived quickly and in excellent condition.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it even came with a sternum strap.

The only downside I found was that my shoulder pads were cheesy woodland camo while the rest of my pack and gear is OD. Not a big deal - the serviceability more than makes up for the cosmetics.

 "Adequate frame, substandard straps" 2010-04-03
By Knuckleduster
While the frame itself is perfectly adequate, the straps that come with it fall far short of the mark. They are very cheaply made and the padding is on the thin side. Worse yet, the quick release buckle won't cinch down on one side, so I've had to buy new straps from a better source.

If you don't plan on carrying heavy loads and if you're willing to risk having to buy new straps anyway, go for it. Otherwise, just go ahead and spend the extra money now on a higher quality product.

 "Comfortably does the job" 2010-07-29
By cielsaphir
I chose this shoulder pad for my messenger bag because it looked like I could easily remove the red name tag (I could). It makes carrying my laptop and multiple books much more comfortable when I bike. The non-slip grip is great, and I could easily transfer it to another bag if I had one. My one complaint is that it is a little bulkier than I expected, so it looks pretty clunky on my bag and against my small frame. Ultimately I bought this thing for function over fashion, so I'm satisfied. P.S.- ordering on amazon.com instead of MP's website saves you a couple bucks in shipping costs.

 "Travel Essential" 2010-04-19

I love love love my Timbuk2 Medium Messenger Bag, and had used it for school/grocery shopping for several years without the strap pad. I bought the pad before going to study abroad in Europe last summer since I was using my bag as a carry-on. The pad really made a remarkable difference. I took my bag through 6 different airports, used it as a weekender, and essentially lived out of it the whole summer. The pad made carrying my life around on my shoulder much more bearable. I now use it for school again, and I can tell a difference in the amount of cutting-into-shoulder pain. Definitely worth it, if you're going to commit to an excellent Timbuk2 bag, go for the pad as well and really get the most out of your bag.

"the lesser of two evils" 2009-10-22
By fab (london)
Getting a bag in extra large bag in UK is a bit of a mission impossible. After finally ordering one from the EU It arrived with no shoulder strap. Any of the larger bags should have them as standard due to the extra weight to be carried.

Used a padded shoulder strap from an old Nike messenger bag to see if it was worth the trouble and expense of getting a padded shoulder pad. Found the Nike shoulder pad done the trick.

Located the non slip version in a local cycle shop, and purchased the non slip padded shoulder strap.

The non slip does what it says, stays were it is with a bag loaded with 10-15 kg on a 11 mile trip. The down side is after 7 miles it starts hurt. My old Nike strap does not hurt, but slips every few miles.

It boils down to the lesser of two evils, or pain. The pain of the padded strap or the pain of falling of my bike due to my bag slipping to the side at speed when taking a corner. So I guess its ok

 "A Must-Have Upgrade for the Commute 2.0" 2009-10-11
By Snoo-Snoo (Japan)
This pad should probably have been the stock pad on the Commute 2.0 messenger bag. As there is no way to attach a cross-strap to the Commute 2.0, the rubber grip pad is necessary to help stabilize the bag while riding. With the rubber grip pad, my bag hardly ever slips during my daily bicycle commute.

The rubber pad also has a much nicer gel-like material on the inside, rather than the hard foam used in the stock pad. The end result is a pad that stays on your shoulder and feels a whole lot more comfortable to boot.

Well made but poorly desingned. There is no anti slip so the strap keeps sliding off your shoulder. Don't buy it!

This is a shoulder pad. It attaches to the strap on your bag and pads your shoulder. Mission accomplished!
