"Really small pack - well made" 2010-08-24
By Thor Albro (Seattle, WA United States)
Just got this and this is what stands out:

1) 2 good sized water bottles and holders.

2) Extra padding - this is a fanny for serious walking without chaffing.

3) The actual pack part (pocket?) is really small and will fit maybe a camera and sunglasses and that's it.

4) Not much else in the way of pockets other than a few little net things for a cell phone or something.

5) I am 37" waist and the strap just barely spools out enough for me - if you are thicker than 38" think twice about this one.

 "Smart move" 2010-04-11
By Bill H. (IL)
I purchased this lumbar pack to add to the one I already owned. I thought to try the open box special and was pleasantly surprised at both the speed of delivery and the condition of the item. The pack was in excellent condition and turned out to be exactly what my wife and I wanted. Now we each have a pack to carry while hiking on the CO mountain trails near our place there.

"It's what you see in the photo" 2009-11-05
By Jack Straw (Oakhurst, CA)
What you see is what you get. It's well made, comfortable and fits my 40" waist. I wish there was a bit more pocket room, fits my Canon S5is in the main compartment with no room to spare. A couple of small pockets on the sides for keys, wallet, glasses and that's it. If that's all you need room for it's perfect. Recommended

 "Awesome!" 2010-05-28

Lots of room. Great quality. I fill both bottles for hikes (10 miles on average) and have plenty of water left. There is room for keys, phone, and plenty of snacks. Ipod compartment is awkward (but i wear mine on teh back). Otherwise..great!

 "Great for Everyday" 2009-12-04
By B. Peay (Texas, USA)
I use this bag daily as a diaper bag and carryall. I love the two large pockets- I can put all the baby gear in one and my things in the other. The smaller pockets are great for getting to stuff quickly (like my cell phone and keys) and the multiple water bottle slots are nice for a water bottle for myself in addition to the baby's. Despite it's great functionality as a diaper bag, it doesn't look like a diaper bag and my husband will pack it around as well. :) I also find it extremely useful in traveling. It is just the right size to put things in for a day hike, around town, or taking as a carry-on on the plane. I can attach it easily to my stroller as well as my suitcase. I'm always amazed at how much I can fit in this bag, and people comment on it often. Construction is solid, and the materials seem to be holding up well (I've had this bag for several months now). The black/tungsten has an orange liner which makes it easier to find things inside. The only thing I wish it had was a zippered pocket where the open pocket for the MP3 player is- I use that pocket to hold other things and would prefer it had some kind of closure, but even that is easily fixed with snaps or velcro. Overall, I highly recommend this product.

 "Very Poor Design" 2009-07-04
By N. LEONARD (West Coast USA)
I purchased this Diplomat hoping it would be as good as the fantastic waist pack I hiked 100's of mile in, around the world. I had that old LL Bean pack for 20 years. Since it was discontinued, I searched high and low and thought this one would work. NOT!! It is poorly designed. Once you fill it with a full load ( and properly, with heavy stuff at the bottom and close to the back), it tends to fall backward. In fact, it almost wants to "flip" over backward! The cinch straps are placed too low to pull it in properly. Also, the water bottles sit too low, and rubbed my hips. I am not pleased with the company, High Sierra, as they will not honor a refund due to poor design, nor will ShopBags, through whom I purchased. I wore it only once on my first outing with it, and realized how terribly bad it was. I am now stuck with it, since their return policies are not the least bit friendly. The pack is still "new" without a speck of dust, but I removed the tags. Well---yeah--if I'm going to wear it in public for a real trial, I don't want to wear tags! I would not recommend this to anyone.

"Better than the online description." 2008-11-26
By R. A. Beverlin (Kansas City, Missouri USA)
I needed a comfortably fitting waistpak-like carrier for nature walking and hiking locally. I wanted to be able to carry water, a snack, a very good camera, and a few other odds and ends. The High Sierra Diplomat Lumbar Pack is just what its name states: worthy of a diplomat. Roomy pockets for hiking or overseas travel. Comfortable, lightweight. This was more than I expected. It is well padded which I like because my camera dose not get bounced around. The Diplomat has a shoulder strap so you can carry it for easier access - like you are looking for a good photo opp. I recommend this bag for someone who wants a versatile carrier and a great price.

This is perfect for anyone looking to replace the diaper bag for something more sporty and not screaming "I have no life!" I was afraid it was going to be HUGE like the reviews said, but it was just smaller than our diaper bag. It's the perfect size! I got the Chipotle color, which I love, it's super comfy, and versatile (shoulder strap or waist band). Most importantly I am not going to feel embarrassed carrying it around while chasing our toddler!

 "Vibe II" 2010-03-31
By Frank W Titoni
This product is high quality all around.

The only suggestion I might offer to make it better would be to replace the three

utility loops (one top center and one at either front side) with para cord instead of the fabric that is used. I probably will not use those loops as they are, I would not trust them to hold without tearing. Otherwise this is an excellent pack. Vibe II has the proper compartment size and structure for a small unobtrusive and comfortable lumbar pack.

"My day excursion and micro diaper bag" 2009-05-30
By Robert Petkus (New York)
First off, I'm glad Amazon carries this product -- but I really wanted to physically inspect a number of lumbar packs, make comparisons, and decide if it met my capacity, comfort, and utilitarian needs. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any in my area stores.

As it was, choosing this particular pack was almost torturous as you don't get a clear idea of what it can hold. And so I kept vacillating between a few High Sierra products -- this one, the Diplomat (which seemed too high and narrow), the Ridgeline (maybe to large?), and the Envoy and Passport (both of which didn't have bottle pockets). But in the end, this product seemed like the best choice.

The primary motivation for getting a lumbar pack is that I needed a mini diaper bag, something I could bring to museums, etc., with the kids and have full function of my arms and hands. Fanny packs didn't fit the bill because I don't want something bulky in the front as it gets in the way. Backpacks are size-overkill and make for sweaty backs in the summer.

That said, it's a nice pack with 2 pockets (one large, one small). For me, one holds a travel size baby wipe case, a few diapers and cream; the other, car keys, camera or flip, sunglasses. Not much more could fit - maybe other slim electronic devices like a phone and iPod, but since there are only 2 pockets one has to consider what's going to be scraping against what.

The mesh bottle holders are nice -- they are each designed with a stretchy loop that holds the bottle snug so it doesn't fall out. That's good but it also means that blindly reaching behind to reinsert a bottle is a finger-fumbling act. Maybe I'm lame, but I have to rotate the pack to the front to place the bottles back. The holders hold most any 16-20oz bottle: bottled h2o, soda, arizona iced tea, etc.. The included bottle is useless to me as it contains BPA -- sort of idiotic given the chemical's bad press.

Lastly, if you need to access your stuff *often*, get a fanny pack -- reaching behind or rotating constantly isn't convenient, especially if you have a camera in there.

Overall a well-made, comfortable, and useful product. Would recommend.

 "Satisfied" 2008-11-19

The pack is nice-sized to hold enough necessities without being too overwhelming. The water bottle was a disappointment. It has only a "large mouth jar" opening...okay if you want to wash with the water. I would still buy the pack, however.

"Good Pack, Bigger Than I Expected!" 2008-07-12
By Timothy M. Chadwick
I ride a bike a lot and use this pack instead of a bike bag for carrying everyday stuff like bike repair kit, reading glasses, wallet, etc. as well as a faily large digital camera and my ipod. With some packs of this type I've had problems with the clasp on the belt popping open when I'm riding, this one is nice and solid and has stayed firmly closed. I also like the way the pack feels on my waist, it's very comfortable and tends to dissapear after a while. The water bottle holders are useful althogh I only use one the other one tends to end up with a snack shoved in it. Overall construction seems very solid so I'm sure I'll be using this pack for several years. A lot of pack for the money!

"Nice little bag for the price" 2010-03-23
By markfmaguy
Nice little bag for the price; don't expect to carry everything you own in it, but for carrying a few items it's a great bag, with a wide comfortable waist strap, plenty of padding and a good water bottle. To give you an idea of what it will hold, here is what is in mine:

Two dollar-store plastic travel soap dishes (one contains first aid supplies, one contains a small knife, sharpener, and magnesium fire starter); small ziplock bag of steel wool and dryer lint for kindling; 25 feet of 550 cord; emergency blanket; 5-function emergency whistle; water purification tablets; a Z-Blade Knife ([...]).

I'm sure I can also fit my bow stringer and a spare longbow string, but that's probably about it. The bag is made very well and should hold up just fine for a long time.

 "Not so good..." 2009-08-06
By AngelOfDarkWinds (Budapest, Hungary)
These are my first impressions:

A little bit big - a little bit flat, a lot uncomfortable and not practical.

As I'm a thin woman this bag is too wide for me, it's as wide as my back. For usage I usually wear lumbar packs at the side and not at the back or front. This one is not wearable at the side when there is anything in it. And for exactly the same thing you can't turn it over from the back to the front when you want to take something out.

Having the waterbottle on only one side is not that big problem since the bag fits well on the back, I don't feel the full bottle a discomfort at all.

I think the biggest problem is turning it around the hip.

If I wouldn't need it so much at the moment for having a bottle-holder on it I would resell it or return it. However it's not that bad to be unusable.

 "No Storage Capacity" 2009-04-27

 "Not a Perfect Fit" 2009-02-07
By S. Hopper (West Virginia)
Ergonomically comfortable, lots of pockets, well over a foot worth of trail-ready storage, plus two holsters for water bottles, all in a sturdy, well-made product with adjustable sizing for the perfect fit.

The only problem was that it is designed for recreation, not work. My farmer husband was put off by the myriad of various-sized compartments obviously designed for keys, cell phone, credit cards, etc. He wanted one mega pocket (and hold the water) for farm chore duty - you know, pocket knife, fencing staples, tobacco pouch.

I had the size right, and this product does it all, but the fit was wrong for the intended usage. This is a pouch for Sierra-Clubbers or joggers.

"Great bag, inadequate bottle pockets" 2010-02-17
By James E. Logan (Ojai, CA)
I love this bag for its comfort and substantial volume. I can carry a lot of stuff on the trail for a long time in real comfort. But I'll be blunt: the water bottle pockets are inadequate. Seriously. They're advertised as being able to handle 32-ounce bottles (think Nalgene), and they will fit, but the pockets are so shallow the bottles WILL fall out if you do anything other than just walk. Why can't Mountainsmith design acceptable pockets for the most common water bottles for hikers? It's not hard: JUST MAKE THEM DEEPER. Other than that, it's a great pack.

Customer Buzz
"Very well-made, lots of room, but room for improvement" 2009-09-21
By J. Spicer (Wyoming)
I use this bag in my travels as well as a good, everyday, pack. I think the quality is top-notch, and it's a plus that recycled materials are used in the construction.

My only "gripe" is that the shoulder pad on the shoulder strap has no way of fastening itself to one place on the strap - it migrates around and often ends up at the end of the strap. If there was some Velcro on the interior of the pad and on the middle of the strap, one could stop the movement.

Customer Buzz
"got it in red, but it's 'green'!" 2009-05-21
By willie (pineapple park, FL, USA)
Had a hard time deciding between the Tour or the Day (which is larger), but the Tour is perfect for my needs of simple urban treks to and through local parks or fishing on the pier. This pack is simply fabulous. The material is heavy duty and looks like it will hold up. The fit, finish, stitching, buckles, straps, and padding are top notch. Bright yellow inside for visibility. Small zippered hanging bag inside. Key clip in outer zip pocket.

Belt is wide and long enough for Clydesdales. I don't know why no manufacturer provides belt length in specs, but I'm grateful for this feature because of all the beer and chili dogs in my recent past.

Although the bottle pockets are advertised as deep enough for 32oz'rs, I'd take that info with a grain of salt. Enough room for me to carry a micro umbrella, .75L mug/pot, 220gm fuel canister, Optimus Crux stove, lighter, coffee cup, spork, Cup o' Noodles or ramen, wallet, keys, cell phone, small digital camera, handheld dual-band amateur radio transceiver, and a couple of water bottles with no problem.

The really cool thing about this pack (and the Day), is the flexibility of wear and use. For example, you can use the pack as a shoulder bag with the included padded shoulder strap. Stow the strap in the padded pocket in the small of the back and wear as a lumbar pack. Stow the strap and fold the waist pads and belt into two hidden side pockets and carry this like a tool bag. Add the 'Strapette,' (purchased separately), and you can wear as a small daypack or support much heavier loads in the pack as a lumbar.

Finally, I'm no tree-hugger, but it is nice that an effort has been made by the manufacturer to create this pack using material made (partially) from recycled water bottles - nearly 20 according to the little tag included with the bag.

Buy this product with confidence. I'm sure you'll be pleased.

UPDATE: I've discovered that this bag is *perfect* as a handlebar bag on my vintage Specialized Rockhopper mountain bike. With the hip belt inserted and reverse-buckled, a single short bungee looped around the head tube and latched onto a loop on each side holds this bag firmly in front and off the front tire - w00t! BONUS!
