I've had one for my own use for 10 years and love it. We camp a lot and never leave with out it. I like the way that the you can access the tools without opening it all the way up. I bought this one for my son.

 "steve's swiss tool review" 2009-12-17
By S. Levine
I bought this knife about six years ago for around $50 at Lowe's and i mostly love it. It's very handy and tough. The only drawback, and not one I consider serious enough to take away a star, is how tight some of the tools are. When I thought I lost this knife about two years ago I bought a Swiss Tool Spirit model and the blades are much easier to open and close with that model but it is not as hefty or manly as the original. Not coincidentally, my wife prefers the Spirit. It is a beautiful knife but if you really want a tool with some heft and the ability to do some serious work get the Swiss Tool.

"Replacing original after 6+ years (and 2 deployments)" 2009-11-26
By Nathan J. Trotter
I apologize in advance for the lengthy reveiw.

I purchased the original Victorinox SwissTool back in 2003? I'm not positive about the exact date. Anyway, I am in the military and use multi tools on a daily basis, (cleaning weapons, fixing equipment, putting equipment together, vehicle maintenance and a host of other situations including using it as a hammer on more occasions than I can count). I originaly had a Super Leatherman, the one with the open handles that bit into your hand, but purchased this when it became available. This tool ahs been with me through countless field exercises, 2 deployments and many more countless "MOPO mondays"

This multi tool (the original) has virtually every tool you could wish for with a couple of exceptions which I will get into at the end. The handles are rounded and don't ever cut into your hand (original Leatherman, some SOG tools) or pinch your hands (most Gerbers) and are very easy to use one handed once you get used to them. Its very easy to use the pliers as a kind of ratchet once you have gotten the technique down, the pliers are very smooth to operate. (anecdote: I have used the pliers many times to turn a cleaning rod with chamber brush attachment whilst cleaning the "star chamber". If you don't know what I mean try to imagine grasping a smooth metal rod with your Multi tool and having the pliers bite in enough, and hold, to actually turn it against a lot of tension. The straight blade takes a very good edge and the rest of the tools are incredibly durable (except maybe the wire cutters, read in the cons for further detail). I have actualy broken the smallest flat head screw driver when I used it to pry something open, but was able to refurbish it using someone else's Gerber multi-tool file (it kind of ruined their file though...). I have broken the leather punch by also using it as a pry bar, but couldnt really figure out how to fix it, but still use the sharp edge to scrape carbon off of metal componants (bolt extractor on M4). The file has been VERY useful, both the wood and metal side of it. The woodsaw is still one of the best ones I have seen on a multi tool, the one on the Gerber with spring handles just gets bogged down too much and the one on my super leatherman took way too long. Everything else has stood the test of time and is still in perfect working order. I have had to use CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant and Protectant) a couple of times to relube and clean the the hinges(?) but otherwise haven't done anything anything else to maintain it.

I still haven't seen a hint of rust or corrosion on this multi tool.

The only reason I am going to be getting the "X" version is because the pouch has finally broken (has a couple of wear holes at the bottom, the clasp(?) finally broke.), the serrated blade (for me) is rarely ever used and is a pain in the butt to sharpen, the file is getting worn down (especially the bottom of the file), the smallest screwdriver has finally become a loss (its too thick at the bottom to use as a tiny screw driver) and the new one has scissors!

Cons:

I have wished for a very long time for this multi tool to have a set of scissors, a GOOD pair of scissors unlike the leatherman Micro which is currently on my keychain. I rarely ever use the serrated blade, although the serrated blade on the RS does look more useful, I like the file more. The wire cutters can't cut through concertina wire!! then aain I havent seen any multi tool that can do this without damage to the multi tool wire cutters. I found this out on more than one occasion, and the concertina wire actually dented(?) the wire cutters. I was able to fix this with someone elses file. Which brings me to another point I really wish the file was detachable, as more often than not, I have needed a file to fix something I screwed up on the multi-tool itself. I wish this tool had a one handed opening blade.

All in all I recommend this tool to anyone that asks. I do like the potential of some of the SOG tools, but I dont like that little flap you have to open first to get to the tools. I really like the pliers for this tool, they are big enough to handle most jobs and they can literally take a pounding (think rusted nut and a hammer to provide that extra leverage) unlike most of the Gerber pliers of which I have broken 2. This is a tool that will last as many years as you need it to.

 "Excelent tool" 2009-10-04
By Anthony Giardina (SLO, CA)
I've run this tool over, thrown it, smashed it, and used it for many purposes for which it was not intended, and it's still in perfect shape! the hinges have no slop, and the finish barely shows any wear. Unlike many other multi-tools, the pliers here have some real power behind them. You don't have to worry when you crank down on the handles with all the strength in your hand. It's expensive, but well worth it due to it's toughness and durability. I would definitely recommend this to a friend or family member.

 "Nearly perfect multitool" 2010-01-30
By J. Mueller
I have owned and carried several brands and models of multi-tools (Leatherman, SOG, etc.) over the last 7-8 years on a daily basis. I am never without one in my pocket or on my belt. The Swisstool X is easily the best all-around tool I have ever owned for every day carry. The tool selection is very complete, more so than most any other tool out there. The build quality is simply astounding. Fit and finish is second to none and puts other more expensive tools to shame. All of the implements are very well thought out and many have multiple uses. Victorinox has been in the multi-tool game longer than anyone else in the world, in fact you could argue they invented the multi-tool with the Swiss Army Knife, and it shows with this tool. Size and weight wise it compares roughly with full size tools such as the Leatherman Surge. It is slightly lighter and thinner than the Surge however, making it a lot easier to carry around, while still offering more versatility without having to carry around all the extra bits and blades that you need to have to get full use out of the Surge.

It looks extremely elegant and inoffensive making it a lot more suitable for use in public places where some people may get nervous about the looks of the large "tactical" looking blades on most Leatherman models. The polish makes it very very rust resistant, far more so than any other multi-tool I have ever encountered. However, despite it looking so elegant and pretty, it is indeed a VERY heavy duty tool. It may look "gentlemanly" compared to other tools, but rest assured it can and will take every bit of the hard use and abuse, if not more so, than any of it's competitors.

The outside opening tools are a fantastic design. The tools all open in the typical Victorinox "Swiss army knife" fashion. This makes it convenient, and the sense of familiarity further makes it a great tool for use around people who are unfamiliar with multi-tools and may become nervous about the looks of some of the larger Leatherman tools. The only real caveat is that the knife (which is essentially the same as those found on Swiss Army knives)cannot be opened very quickly. If you work in an environment where you may need quick one-handed opening of the knife, this tool may not be for you, however if you don't really "need" that feature (and realistically, most people don't, they just like to think they do) this tool has more to offer, in a far more efficient and attractive package. It may be a bit large and heavy compared to a Leatherman Wave/ Charge, or a SOG Powerlock, but it has far more to offer. Despite it's length and weight, it is much "thinner" than many smaller tools, and has a much smoother and rounded feel to it, making very easy to carry in the pocket. It works great on a belt sheath, since it's thinness means it doesn't protrude out from the waist and get in the way as much as other multi-tools are apt to do. This smooth roundness also makes it exceptionally comfortable to hold onto and use. It can feel a bit slippery however, especially with wet hands - not usually a problem, just something to be aware of.

All in all, you would be very hard pressed to find a better suited tool to every day carry. The tool selection is very well thought out. The "X" model exchanges the standard model's serrated blade for scissors which I find more useful day to day. There is also the "RS" model that replaces the file with a large seat belt cutter/ rescue blade. For day to day use I find the "X" model to be the best, however your needs may vary.

Compared to other full-size tools in it's class (LM Surge, Supertool 300, etc.) it is comparatively compact and light. Very comfortable to use, has an excellent selection of tools, appears inoffensive and elegant, and is very very well made. Don't hesitate to give this tool a try if you are looking for a full size every day carry. If you need something smaller and lighter still, then look at the Swisstool Spirit, which has 95% of the tools and versatility, in a package half the size and weight. Also, Victorinox offers a full LIFETIME warranty should you actually manage to break the thing.

"I will say the best multitool" 2009-09-24
By Rouslan Chtcherbina (Atlanta,GA)
I owe Wave and Vic.X tool as I found them to be the best of the best on the market among multitools. Recently I bought Leatherman TTi Charge(the most expensive one) and pliers broke with first hard squeeze... that was unacceptable for me and I returned it. I owe first Wave and X tool for 4 years now and will say that for more delicate job you probably would want Leatherman Wave but for the tough job (any job)- X tool is 100% the leader. Just look ahead of time and decide where, and how, you will most likely use your "knives". The best future for me over Wave is quality of steel. I didn't see anything of the same or better steel quality in other knives yet. The best description I found from Aj Viljoen here: [...] Good Luck !

 "Excellent multitool" 2009-03-13
By David S. Markowitz (PA)
I have owned or evaluated multitools by several manufacturers, and Victorinox makes the best. The manufacturing quality is outstanding. The selection of tools is excellent, the tools lock solidly in place, and the knife is razor sharp out of the box.

When used as pliers, the outside of the handles do not dig into your hand.

Highly recommended.

"The best multitool I've found" 2009-01-08
By J. W. Graham (Florence, SC USA)
I bought one of these for myself, and a week later, one for my dad as the perfect Christmas gift. The one for my dad replaced a Leatherman Wave that broke only a few months after he got it. I had trouble finding one locally at all, as stores only had the Swiss Army Knife line of Victorinox Tools around here (no SwissTools). Thank goodness for Amazon!

This tool is heavy and well made. There is a night and day difference between it and the Wave in terms of quality workmanship.

One thing I wish could be better is the file. A diamond file on one side like on the Wave would probably have been more useful to me than having two course and fine file surfaces on this tool. However, the files do work very well, and the other tools make up for this with their versatility. The awl/reamer tool is very handy, as is the wood chisel. The screwdrivers are far more rugged than the drive bit system in the Wave, which is what broke the worst for my dad. Plus, there are no parts to fall out and get lost.

I'm very pleased with this tool. It stays on my belt now, where it can always be handy.

 "SwissTool Spirit" 2009-12-26

Decent quality. I mostly use knife, scissors, and file. All of them doing the job pretty good. I would prefer a snap button on the pouch instead of velcro. Otherwise it is good buy.

 "Well Made, A Gentleman's Tool" 2009-11-23
By Confederate (Bethesda, MD)
A good multitool is worth its weight in gold, but only figuratively. The Victorinox Spirit is elegant and fully functional, but the price is not cheap and the quality of its cutting steel is still very pedestrian, as all Victorinox blades. I suspect it's on the save level as a good 420HC steel, but would be happier with even better.

There's a certain elegance that makes this tool desirable, but for someone who really needs tools every day, the Charge TTi, in my opinion, would be the way to go. After a good bladed knife (which the Leatherman Charge TTi provides -- in S30V steel, one of the best), the next most useful tool for me is a good screwdriver, and the Spirit simply lacks the bits and strength of the Charge. After that, the other tools can be left to the user.

Unlike the Leathermans, the tools don't lock on this model, which is a shame. But they're still very usable. And while the Charge is like a good sixpack of beer, the Spirit is like a fine wine. The blades are not as long nor as strong as the Leatherman's, but they work, and there's a beauty about the Spirit that would not make it out of place with a nice business suit.

If you occasionally open and work on a computer, the Spirit will do. If you do it every day, you're better off with the Charge. The beauty is far greater than depicted in the photos above, but I like the utility of the Charge and the elegance of the Spirit.

This tool goes with me just about everywhere. The craftsmanship is next to none. When I am bored at work I just get it out of the leather belt sheath and work the differant blades in and out of the stored position. I know, sounds weird but you have to admire the precision of Swiss Army . Its almost surgical.
