 "Katadyn replacement" 2010-01-22
By T. T. Ramaharitra (CA, USA)
I will echo the previous review, It's overpriced, not quite 200 gallon as rated, but still the best filter for outdoor trip. You can remove the first cover of the filter (the mesh and the wrapping) and clean it with a chlorine water, it will make the filter go faster again until it gets clogged.

I have used 4 of those in total. My expedition team (4 people)replaces the filter every 3 months and It's impressive to see all the retained mud and silt inside the big water bag.

"Doesn't last long and overpriced" 2009-01-18
By J. Lee
Bought the Katadyn Hiker for a 4 day backpacking trip in the Sierra's. The water quality was/is outstanding in the high mountain lakes and streams as they are all fed by snow runoff. Pumping the first 20 gallons of water went very well. At about 25 gallons, it started to get ridiculously hard to pump water through. I was actually afraid of breaking it on the 4th day of the trip as it really took a lot of force to get water through. I even wrapped the inlet in a coffee filter with the hopes of preserving the element longer. The filter element was quite yellow at the end of the trip. I'm pleased the filter is so effective in keeping out contaminants even in seemingly pristine water. I'm not pleased however that it only lasted 30-35 gallons over 4 days and costs $35 to replace the element.

 "Great water filter" 2008-09-27

It took some research to figure out this was the right cartridge for my filter, but it is and it works great. Once inserted it greatly improved the speed of my filter.

 "Works great!" 2008-09-21
By D. Vaughan (Springfield, MO USA)
Used this on a four-day Appalachian Trail hike, and it worked great. I was with a scout group, and there were two other water filtration products in the group. The Katadyn worked much better than the other two, and we ended up using it to filter water for most of the group. Would wholeheartedly recommend.

"Does its job (not for long), and it's expensive." 2008-09-14

This is the third year we've used these replacement filters in the Katadyn Base Camp water filter. The Base Camp is an excellent idea; fill the bag and let gravity do the work.

The filters are advertised as: "Provides up to 200-gallon capacity (depending on water quality)" I'm guessing you'd only get 200-gallons with clean, city tap water.

The past 3 years we've gone into the BWCA with 8 people for 4 days. We bring the Base Camp filter with 2 replacement cartridges. Each cartridge lasts for perhaps 25-30 gallons (~ 10-12 refills of the Base Camp bag). The water in the BWCA generally has a red tint (iron?) and there are always a few microscopic bugs, but I would still hope a filter would last more than 25-30 gallons. I follow all the directions that come with the filter with the hope of extending its life, but it doesn't really help.

I'd give this filter 5 stars if it lasted for just 100 gallons or were half the current price of ~ $33 USD.

On the positive side, the filter works - no one has returned home with a water-borne illness.

P.S. This year, Amazon was the only place we could find these filters. They had been back-ordered (sometimes for several months) at all the local retailers.
