 "Nice products." 2010-02-28
By AWBoater (USA)
I have bought my wife several Kipling products, and they are nice for just giving a gift. It seems as they are made quite well, and while some folks consider them a bit expensive, thats a relative thing; for sure, a lot cheaper than a Louis Vuitton Backpack - and probably more durable too.

We like to take cruises on occasion, and she finds this to be just the right thing for carry-on aboard the ship. And with the bag's expansion feature, we can stuff it full of the souvenirs we seem to collect on the cruise.

This my first backpack from Kipling and I don't know why I waited so long to buy one. It's so light even when it's full. I carry my Canon 50D where ever I go and the padding inside keeps it safe.

"Does not fit right on my back" 2010-01-10
By Renata M W
I have a couple of Kipling bags and I like them a lot, specially for traveling, so this backpack was a disappointment for me. It does not fit straight on by back unless it is completely full. When half-full it folds on my back (the bottom comes upwards) and it is uncomfortable to carry along. The first (biggest) pocket is fine to access with two zippers but the other two medium+smaller pockets in the front have a single zipper each that opens all the way from bottom to bottom so you must be careful not to drop things out of your bag when opening them.

 "Katadyn replacement" 2010-01-22
By T. T. Ramaharitra (CA, USA)
I will echo the previous review, It's overpriced, not quite 200 gallon as rated, but still the best filter for outdoor trip. You can remove the first cover of the filter (the mesh and the wrapping) and clean it with a chlorine water, it will make the filter go faster again until it gets clogged.

I have used 4 of those in total. My expedition team (4 people)replaces the filter every 3 months and It's impressive to see all the retained mud and silt inside the big water bag.

"Doesn't last long and overpriced" 2009-01-18
By J. Lee
Bought the Katadyn Hiker for a 4 day backpacking trip in the Sierra's. The water quality was/is outstanding in the high mountain lakes and streams as they are all fed by snow runoff. Pumping the first 20 gallons of water went very well. At about 25 gallons, it started to get ridiculously hard to pump water through. I was actually afraid of breaking it on the 4th day of the trip as it really took a lot of force to get water through. I even wrapped the inlet in a coffee filter with the hopes of preserving the element longer. The filter element was quite yellow at the end of the trip. I'm pleased the filter is so effective in keeping out contaminants even in seemingly pristine water. I'm not pleased however that it only lasted 30-35 gallons over 4 days and costs $35 to replace the element.

 "Great water filter" 2008-09-27

It took some research to figure out this was the right cartridge for my filter, but it is and it works great. Once inserted it greatly improved the speed of my filter.

 "Works great!" 2008-09-21
By D. Vaughan (Springfield, MO USA)
Used this on a four-day Appalachian Trail hike, and it worked great. I was with a scout group, and there were two other water filtration products in the group. The Katadyn worked much better than the other two, and we ended up using it to filter water for most of the group. Would wholeheartedly recommend.

"Does its job (not for long), and it's expensive." 2008-09-14
By Glibzorbnik (Corcoran, MN)
This is the third year we've used these replacement filters in the Katadyn Base Camp water filter. The Base Camp is an excellent idea; fill the bag and let gravity do the work.

The filters are advertised as: "Provides up to 200-gallon capacity (depending on water quality)" I'm guessing you'd only get 200-gallons with clean, city tap water.

The past 3 years we've gone into the BWCA with 8 people for 4 days. We bring the Base Camp filter with 2 replacement cartridges. Each cartridge lasts for perhaps 25-30 gallons (~ 10-12 refills of the Base Camp bag). The water in the BWCA generally has a red tint (iron?) and there are always a few microscopic bugs, but I would still hope a filter would last more than 25-30 gallons. I follow all the directions that come with the filter with the hope of extending its life, but it doesn't really help.

I'd give this filter 5 stars if it lasted for just 100 gallons or were half the current price of ~ $33 USD.

On the positive side, the filter works - no one has returned home with a water-borne illness.

P.S. This year, Amazon was the only place we could find these filters. They had been back-ordered (sometimes for several months) at all the local retailers.

I bought this for my son as his first "big" Swiss Army knife. It provides enough useful tools for him to do small projects and have a pocket knife handy on a camping or fishing trip. I have had Swiss Army knives since I was a pre-teen myself and highly recommend any one of them.

"Super knife good for anything!" 2009-10-16
By A Concerned Citizen
This knife is awesome! Great toolbox in a easily pocketable configuration. The saw is simply the best on any multitool. The blades come sharp, are easily sharpened, and hold thier edge very well. This is a great whittlers knife; I use it around the farm too. Pair this SAK with a Victorinox Rambler and Leatherman Skeletool and you have a pocket toolbox that will tackle just about any job!

 "Great Knife" 2006-12-29

For years I carried a Classic SD knife until I "lost" it at the airport. I was looking for a replacement when I found the Classic SD bundled with this knife. Well, I lost the second Classic SD at the airport (slow learner), so now all I carry is this knife. It has come in handy for outdoor activities as well as household chores. I miss the scissors and nail cleaner, though, so now I am looking for another compact Swiss Army knife with those tools.

 "Great filter!" 2009-06-22
By M. Green
My husband and I, along with other adults, take a group of girls up into the Los Padres National Forest in California every summer for a few days. We have used this filter for a number of years and it works great! We can pump enough water for over 10 people and it's so easy to use. I think we'll buy another one to make it more convenient, the price is right.

 "Refreshing" 2008-09-18
By Brian Imel (Veneta, OR USA)
I used this on a long backpack trip in the Idaho Sawtooths. It was hot and dry, and the snow melt was dwindling. It worked extremely well. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because it took a little longer than my last water purifier to pump the same volume. I was cooking for 5 and pumping more than 1 1/2 gallons at each meal was tedious. I will get another one before my next trip to speed the process.

"Great Filter! Hasn't failed me yet!" 2009-11-20
By Stephen F. Miller (Pennsylvania)
I have used the Katadyn Hiker Pro on wilderness canoe camping trips for three years now in tannin rich waters in Maine and the Adirondacks and have had no trouble at all.

Recently one of my camping partners had his MSI Mini-Works fail in short order but we were able to continue on with my Hiker Pro, providing us with clean water for the rest of our four day wilderness camping trip.

I tend to replace the filter cartridge every year before my spring canoe camping trips and this keeps me pumping clean water for the whole year.

The provided end cap fits the Nalagene bottles of many sizes and canteen water bags easily; however I recommend optional screw on cap attachments for Platypus water bags as they make your life can be much easier when pumping from steep, muddy banks without worrying about end cap parting from the top of the bag/bottle as you hang on and pump.

"Easy to use and works fast" 2009-11-16
By Thomas Bloess (Duarte, Ca)
I have tested it before and finally took it out on a backpacking trip. First things first, now that I am back from my trip I can report not getting sick, which is a great start. Secondly, I filled 2 liters of water in the time it took my buddy to figure out how to use his steri-pen, even though he may not be the brightest, the hiker pro worked really well. The water bladder adapter made the job easy and mess free as well. I would highly recommend this.

"Works, more so than the customer service does." 2009-11-04
By M. Byington
I bought this filter as I section hike the Appalachian trail and had been borrowing a MSR filter from a friend. I bought this filter 2 and 1/2 weeks before my most recent trip and when the filter came in I noticed the prefilter was missing. I contacted the customer service and informed them of this and within 1 hour I had received a response saying they would send it out as soon as possible. Well a few days before the trip I send another message since I hadnt received the piece and they said they sent it already. A week AFTER my trip was over the piece finally came in and based on the post mark it was sent 3 days before it came in. I wouldnt be so mad if it wasnt for the fact that they lied to me about the situation.

At home the filter does work just like any other but given the choice I would have opted for the MSR filter that I know is reliable and as far as I know already comes with all the pieces you need. This is what I get for trying to save a few bucks.

"Never leave home without it" 2009-10-15
By Joseph W. Donk
I received this last March as A birthday present and just used it for the first time, it works great. I first tried it out on some accumulated rain water in our camp tarp; the water was not quite clear, but tasted fine. I drank the filtered water all weekend with no ill effects, so it must work. I would recommend this product to any one who hikes, bikes or any other outdoor activities. It ways almost nothing and is very simple to use. I love it!

 "Broke Easily" 2009-10-12
By D. Dunlap
Used this twice for on backpacking trips on the AT...one week trip and a weekend. Worked very well. Took it on a long day hike and couldn't get it to work...found out that the intake stem was broken. Never put the filter under too much stress for it to break in such a way. My advice...pay more for a better qaulity pump.
